Why Most Affiliate Marketers Never Make Their First Commission

There’s a moment that nearly every new affiliate marketer knows.

You finally decide you’re going to give this thing a proper go.

You’ve watched enough videos. You’ve read enough blog posts. You’ve found an affiliate programme. You’ve got your link.

Now all you need is that first commission.

£5.

£20.

£50.

You don’t really care how much it is.

You just want to see that first sale come through.

Because once you see that notification saying you’ve earned a commission, you know something important:

It actually works.

But then a day goes by.

Nothing.

A week.

Still nothing.

A month later, you’re wondering what on earth you’re doing wrong.

And this is where a lot of people disappear.

They don’t necessarily quit because affiliate marketing doesn’t work.

They quit because they never figure out why they aren’t getting that first commission.

The problem usually isn’t the affiliate link

Let’s imagine someone called Dave.

Dave decides to try affiliate marketing.

He finds a product he thinks people will like, joins the programme and gets his affiliate link.

Then he starts telling people about it.

He posts on Facebook.

He puts something on Instagram.

He writes a couple of blog posts.

Maybe he even makes some short videos.

He’s doing stuff.

But nobody buys.

So he thinks:

“Maybe I picked the wrong product.”

He finds another one.

Still nothing.

Then he thinks he needs more traffic.

So he watches videos about SEO.

Then YouTube.

Then TikTok.

Then paid advertising.

Suddenly he’s got ten tabs open, three different strategies written down and absolutely no idea which one to follow.

Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing.

Dave’s biggest problem wasn’t that he didn’t have an affiliate link.

He had one.

His problem was that he was concentrating on the product instead of the person.

People aren’t looking for affiliate links

This sounds obvious, but it’s incredibly easy to forget.

People don’t normally go onto Google or social media thinking:

“I wonder if I can find a nice affiliate link today.”

They’ve got a problem.

They’re looking for an answer.

Maybe they want to lose weight.

Maybe they’re looking for a better laptop.

Maybe they want to learn how to trade.

Maybe they’re trying to start an online business.

Maybe they’re looking for a way to save money.

Whatever it is, there’s something they want to solve.

And that’s where affiliate marketing gets interesting.

The product you’re promoting is only useful because it helps solve a problem.

So if all you’re doing is saying:

“Here’s a great product. Click my link.”

you’re asking someone to trust you before you’ve given them much reason to.

This is where many beginners go wrong

They start with:

“What can I sell?”

A much better question is:

“What problem can I help someone with?”

That’s a completely different starting point.

Let’s say you’ve chosen online business as your area.

Instead of writing:

“Check out this great affiliate programme.”

you could create content around the problems people actually have.

For example:

“He spent six months trying to make money online and made nothing.”

Now you’ve got someone’s attention.

Why?

Because there’s a story.

There’s a problem.

And there’s a question hanging in the air:

What went wrong?

You can then explain the mistake.

Maybe he was constantly jumping from one opportunity to another.

Maybe he was buying tools instead of learning how to attract an audience.

Maybe he was trying to sell before building trust.

Maybe he had plenty of information but no clear system for putting it into practice.

Now you’re not just promoting something.

You’re helping someone understand a problem they’re already experiencing.

That’s a much better place to be.

The first commission usually comes after trust

This doesn’t mean you need to become some sort of internet celebrity.

You don’t need 100,000 followers.

You don’t need to be an expert on everything.

You simply need to give people a reason to listen to you.

Think about how you buy things yourself.

If someone you’ve never heard of suddenly tells you to buy something, you’re probably going to ignore them.

But if you’ve been following someone’s content for a while and they’ve consistently helped you understand things, you’re more likely to pay attention when they recommend something.

That’s trust.

And trust doesn’t appear because you put an affiliate link at the bottom of a post.

It builds over time.

So what should you actually do?

I’d keep it much simpler than Dave did.

Start with one person

Don’t try to help everybody.

Think about one particular type of person.

For example:

Someone over 40 who wants to start an online business but feels completely overwhelmed by all the different options.

Now you’ve got somebody in mind.

You can start asking better questions.

What are they worried about?

What are they struggling with?

What have they already tried?

What are they afraid of?

What would they love to achieve?

Those questions give you content.

Then create content around their problems

This is where I think storytelling works particularly well.

Instead of:

“Five reasons you need an email list.”

Tell a story:

“She spent six months building a social media following but forgot to build an email list.”

Then explain what happened.

The lesson might be that social media followers are useful, but having a way to build a relationship with interested people outside a particular platform can be extremely valuable.

Same lesson.

Much more interesting presentation.

Then recommend something that actually fits

This is the bit that matters.

Once you’ve identified the problem, your recommendation should make sense.

Don’t recommend something simply because the commission is attractive.

Ask:

“Does this genuinely help solve the problem I’ve just been talking about?”

If the answer is no, don’t promote it.

You’ll make your content much more credible in the long run.

And don’t expect everyone to buy immediately

This is another mistake that can make affiliate marketing feel like it’s failing.

Someone reads your article.

They don’t buy.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve failed.

They might be interested but not ready.

They might want to think about it.

They might come back next week.

They might read five more articles before they’re comfortable making a decision.

That’s why building an audience and, where appropriate, an email list can be so useful.

You’re not relying on one person making a buying decision the first time they see your content.

You’re building a relationship.

What about traffic?

Of course, you need people to see your content.

There’s no getting around that.

But don’t fall into the trap of thinking:

“I just need more traffic.”

You can have loads of visitors and still make no commissions.

If the wrong people are seeing your content, more traffic won’t necessarily help.

If your content doesn’t build trust, more traffic won’t necessarily help.

If the offer doesn’t match the problem, more traffic won’t necessarily help.

And if there’s no clear next step, more traffic won’t necessarily help.

I’d much rather have 100 people who genuinely care about the problem I’m talking about than 10,000 random visitors who couldn’t care less.

The first commission is really a validation point

This is how I’d look at it.

Your first commission isn’t proof that you’ve suddenly cracked the whole affiliate marketing game.

It’s a signal.

Someone saw what you were saying.

They had a problem.

They trusted your recommendation enough to take action.

And the product solved enough of that problem for them to buy.

Now you have something to investigate.

What content brought them in?

What problem were they trying to solve?

What did they click?

What made them trust the recommendation?

Then you can do more of what worked.

That’s far more useful than simply refreshing your affiliate dashboard 50 times a day hoping for a sale.

What if you don’t know how to put all the pieces together?

This is where I’d at least consider looking at a structured system rather than trying to assemble everything yourself.

That’s one reason Plug-In Profit Site (PIPS) may be worth investigating for someone who’s completely new to online business.

Rather than starting with a blank screen and trying to work out every part of an online business independently, PIPS gives beginners a structured place to explore the different pieces involved.

That doesn’t mean joining PIPS guarantees commissions.

It doesn’t.

You still need to learn, create useful content, attract the right people and put the work in.

But if your biggest problem is:

“I don’t even know where to start or how all these pieces fit together,”

then I think it’s reasonable to take a look.

So, why do most affiliate marketers never make that first commission?

It’s not necessarily because they’re lazy.

It’s not necessarily because affiliate marketing doesn’t work.

And it’s not necessarily because they chose the wrong product.

Quite often, they’ve simply started in the wrong place.

They’re thinking about selling before thinking about helping.

They’re thinking about products before thinking about problems.

They’re thinking about traffic before thinking about trust.

And they’re looking for the perfect affiliate link when what they really need is a better understanding of the person they’re trying to help.

If you can get that part right, everything else starts to make a lot more sense.

And if you’re stuck because you don’t know how to put the pieces together, take a look at PIPS through the link in my profile. Go through the free information, see how the system works and decide for yourself whether it makes sense for you.

You don’t need to believe every promise you see online.

You don’t need to jump into everything.

But you do need to start somewhere.

And sometimes the first commission starts with something much less exciting than a sale.

It starts with finally understanding who you’re trying to help.
