He Started Affiliate Marketing and Made Nothing for 6 Months

Six months.

That’s how long Tom had been trying to make affiliate marketing work.

He’d watched the videos. He’d read the blogs. He’d joined an affiliate programme, picked a few products and even started posting content.

And after six months?

Nothing.

Not £1.

Not one commission.

Not even a tiny sale that would make him think, “Right, this actually works.”

He was starting to wonder whether he’d simply wasted six months of his life.

And here’s the interesting bit.

Tom wasn’t lazy.

He wasn’t stupid.

He hadn’t completely ignored the advice he’d been given.

He’d actually done quite a lot.

So what had gone wrong?

The problem wasn’t that he wasn’t working

Tom had fallen into a trap that catches a lot of people when they first discover affiliate marketing.

He thought the job was mainly about finding products and getting people to click his affiliate links.

So that’s what he concentrated on.

He found products he thought people might want.

He created posts.

He put his affiliate links in the appropriate places.

Then he waited.

A few people clicked.

Most didn’t.

Nobody bought.

So Tom did what many beginners do when something isn’t working.

He changed things.

He found another product.

Then another.

He tried a different type of content.

Then another platform.

Then he watched another training video.

And before long, he was going round in circles.

The more he learned, the more complicated everything seemed.

He’d started with the idea that affiliate marketing was relatively simple.

Find something useful.

Tell people about it.

Earn a commission when someone buys.

Simple.

Except it didn’t feel simple anymore.

Then he realised what he was actually missing

The problem wasn’t necessarily the affiliate products.

It wasn’t necessarily his affiliate links either.

And it certainly wasn’t that affiliate marketing had somehow stopped working.

The missing piece was much more basic.

He hadn’t really thought about the person on the other side of the link.

That’s a surprisingly easy mistake to make.

You can spend hours thinking about which product you want to promote without spending enough time thinking about the person you’re trying to help.

What problem do they have?

What are they worried about?

What have they already tried?

What are they looking for?

Why should they trust you?

And perhaps most importantly:

Why would they buy something simply because you put an affiliate link in front of them?

That’s when Tom started looking at affiliate marketing differently.

People don’t wake up wanting your affiliate link

Think about it from your own point of view.

You don’t normally go online thinking:

“I hope someone gives me an affiliate link to click today.”

You have a problem.

You want an answer.

You’re looking for information.

You want to know whether something works.

You want to avoid wasting money.

You might be trying to learn something.

You might be looking for a better product or service.

The affiliate link comes after all of that.

That’s the bit Tom had missed.

He’d been concentrating on the sale before he’d earned the attention and trust that could lead to the sale.

So what should he have done instead?

He needed to stop thinking:

“What can I promote?”

and start thinking:

“What problem can I help someone solve?”

That sounds like a small change.

It isn’t.

Suppose you’re promoting something related to starting an online business.

You could write:

“Check out this great online business opportunity.”

Or you could tell a story:

“He spent six months trying to make money online and finally realised he was making the same mistake every week.”

Which one makes you want to know more?

The second one.

Because there’s a problem.

There’s a person.

There’s curiosity.

And there’s a lesson waiting at the end.

That’s the approach I’d take.

Start with the problem, not the product

If you’re currently struggling with affiliate marketing, try turning the whole thing around.

Instead of starting your day asking:

“What should I promote?”

ask:

“What problem is my audience trying to solve?”

That question gives you far more possibilities.

Maybe they’re worried they don’t have enough money to start.

Maybe they’re overwhelmed by all the different tools.

Maybe they’ve been posting on social media and getting no results.

Maybe they’ve bought traffic and received clicks but no sales.

Maybe they’ve joined several affiliate programmes and don’t know what to do next.

Maybe they’ve tried affiliate marketing before and quit.

Those problems are content opportunities.

And they’re much more interesting than simply writing another article about why a particular product is “amazing”.

Then give them a reason to trust you

This is where useful content matters.

Don’t make every post a sales pitch.

Help.

Explain.

Tell the story.

Show people what you’ve learned.

Talk about mistakes.

Explain things in ordinary language.

If someone repeatedly finds your content useful, something changes.

They start to recognise your name.

They start to trust your judgement.

And when you eventually recommend something that genuinely fits the problem they’re trying to solve, the recommendation makes much more sense.

You’re no longer shouting:

“BUY THIS!”

You’re saying:

“Here’s the problem I’ve been talking about. Here’s one resource that may help.”

That’s a completely different relationship.

Six months wasn’t necessarily wasted

This was probably the biggest lesson Tom learned.

Making nothing for six months obviously isn’t what anyone wants.

But the six months weren’t necessarily worthless.

He’d discovered what didn’t work for him.

He’d learned that constantly jumping between products wasn’t a strategy.

He’d learned that getting a click isn’t the same as making a sale.

He’d learned that traffic isn’t enough.

And he’d finally understood something that is easy to overlook:

Affiliate marketing isn’t really about links.

It’s about connecting the right person with the right solution at the right time.

Once you understand that, the whole thing starts to look different.

What I’d do if I were starting again

I’d keep it simple.

I’d pick a group of people I genuinely wanted to help.

I’d find out what problems they were dealing with.

I’d create useful content around those problems.

I’d tell stories rather than constantly giving people lectures.

I’d build trust.

I’d give people somewhere useful to go when they wanted more information.

And I’d recommend products and services that actually fitted the problem.

That’s it.

No magic formula.

No promise of overnight income.

And certainly no expectation that six months of work automatically means you’ll have a successful business.

It takes time to figure out what people want, what content attracts them and what actually converts.

But at least you’re working on the right problem.

Could a structured system make things easier?

This is where something like Plug-In Profit Site (PIPS) is worth looking at.

One of the difficulties for beginners is that they can end up trying to assemble everything themselves—website, training, traffic, lead generation, follow-up and different income opportunities—and suddenly what looked simple becomes a collection of unrelated pieces.

PIPS is designed as a structured starting point for people exploring an online business, so it may be worth investigating if your problem is that you don’t know how all the pieces fit together.

It isn’t a magic button.

It won’t send you traffic, make sales or guarantee an income.

You still have to learn, create content, attract people and do the work.

But if you’re tired of jumping from one thing to another and want to see whether a more structured approach makes sense, I’d at least take a look before buying another random course or tool.

The real lesson

If you’ve been doing affiliate marketing for months without making a commission, don’t automatically assume you’re incapable of doing it.

And don’t automatically assume you need another product, another course or another traffic source.

Stop for a moment.

Look at the person you’re trying to help.

Look at the problem you’re solving.

Look at the content you’re producing.

And ask yourself one brutally simple question:

“If I were the person reading this, why would I trust this person enough to click?”

That question might tell you more about your affiliate business than another ten hours of watching tutorials.

And if you’re looking for a more structured place to start, have a look at PIPS through the link in my profile. Go through the information, see how it works and decide for yourself whether it’s right for you.

Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t finding another secret.

Sometimes it’s finally understanding what the business is actually about.
