If you’ve started looking into making money online, you may already be feeling a little confused.
You keep coming across words like:
Affiliate marketing.
Traffic.
Funnels.
Leads.
Email sequences.
Landing pages.
Conversion rates.
SEO.
And you may be thinking:
“What does any of this actually mean?”
If that’s you, don’t worry.
You don’t need to understand a load of technical language before you can start learning how an online business works.
Let’s make it simple.
So what is an online business?
At its most basic, an online business is simply a way of using the internet to connect people with something that can help them.
You might sell your own product.
You might provide a service.
Or you might recommend somebody else’s product and earn a commission when someone buys through your recommendation.
That last one is called affiliate marketing.
What is affiliate marketing?
The easiest way to understand affiliate marketing is to think about recommending something you like.
Imagine your friend asks:
“Where did you buy that?”
You tell them.
They buy it.
In the traditional world, you probably don’t receive anything for making the recommendation.
With affiliate marketing, a company can give you a special link.
If somebody clicks your link and makes a qualifying purchase, you may receive a commission.
That’s basically the idea.
You don’t necessarily have to create the product yourself.
You recommend products or services that other companies provide.
But where do you find people?
This is where you will hear another word:
Traffic.
Traffic simply means people visiting your website or online page.
That’s all.
A busy high street has lots of people walking past the shops.
An online business needs people visiting its website or content.
Those visitors are your online traffic.
You can generate traffic in different ways.
For example:
- writing useful articles
- making videos
- using social media
- appearing in search results
- using paid advertising
You don’t necessarily need to use all of them.
In fact, when you’re starting out, trying to learn everything at once can make things much harder.
What is a website actually for?
Think of your website as your online shop or information centre.
Someone discovers you.
They visit your website.
They learn more about what you are offering.
They can then decide whether they want to take the next step.
You don’t necessarily need a complicated website.
For a beginner, the important thing is having somewhere useful to send people.
What is a lead?
Another word you will hear constantly is lead.
A lead is simply someone who has shown an interest in what you are offering and has given you a way to contact them, usually an email address.
For example, someone might visit your website and decide they want more information.
They enter their email address.
You now have a potential contact who has expressed interest.
That’s a lead.
And what is email marketing?
Again, it sounds more complicated than it is.
Email marketing simply means communicating with people by email.
Instead of hoping somebody remembers to come back to your website tomorrow, you can stay in touch with them.
You might send useful information.
You might answer common questions.
You might tell them about something relevant.
Over time, you can build a relationship with the people who have chosen to hear from you.
What is a funnel?
This is another piece of jargon that can scare beginners.
A funnel is simply the journey someone takes from first discovering you to eventually taking an action.
For example:
They see your video → visit your website → read about your offer → enter their email → receive more information → decide whether they want to buy.
That’s a funnel.
You don’t need to think of it as something mysterious or highly technical.
It’s simply a path.
So why do beginners get overwhelmed?
Because there are a lot of different pieces.
And you can find endless information about every single one of them.
You can spend weeks learning about websites.
Then weeks learning about email.
Then social media.
Then advertising.
Then search engines.
Then funnels.
Before you know it, you’ve learned hundreds of terms but still haven’t actually started building anything.
That’s where having a system can help.
What if someone simply gave you the basic system?
Imagine starting with:
Your website is ready.
Your training is ready.
Your next steps are explained.
You learn as you go.
That can be much easier than starting with a blank screen and trying to work out everything yourself.
This is one of the reasons I use Plug-In Profit Site.
It provides a ready-made starting point along with structured training and tools designed to help you learn the basics of building an online business.
You don’t have to become an expert in internet marketing before you begin.
You can start with the system and learn the terminology and skills as you progress.
You don’t need to learn everything on day one
This is probably the most important thing I would tell somebody completely new to online business.
Don’t try to learn everything at once.
You don’t need to understand search engine optimisation before you take your first step.
You don’t need to become an expert at social media before you learn how affiliate marketing works.
You don’t need to understand every type of advertising before you have even got started.
Learn one thing.
Do it.
Then learn the next thing.
That’s how you build knowledge without becoming overwhelmed.
A simple way to think about the whole process
Forget the jargon for a moment.
Think about it like this:
1. Get attention
Someone discovers you.
2. Give them something useful
You help them solve a problem or answer a question.
3. Send them somewhere useful
They visit your website.
4. Stay in touch
If they are interested, they can choose to hear from you.
5. Recommend something relevant
You introduce them to a product or service that may help them.
6. Earn a commission
If they make a qualifying purchase through your affiliate link, you may receive a commission.
That’s the basic concept.
Everything else is about learning how to do those things effectively.
Why I think a ready-made system can be useful
If you’re technically confident and enjoy building websites, creating your own systems and learning every detail, you may prefer to build everything yourself.
But if you’re sitting there thinking:
“I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”
that’s exactly when a ready-made system can be useful.
Instead of asking you to build the entire business before you understand how it works, you have somewhere to begin and training to help you understand the process.
And as you learn, all those strange-sounding words start to make much more sense.
